Life and Death Cycle

Today
at the birdbath,
taking a long drink,
no doubt its last--
one of last year's fawns.
Displaced hip,
compound fracture of a rear leg,
scrapes and scratches
all over--
realization beginning
to register in the eyes.
It hobbled off to die alone.
I have no wisdom to offer--
death leaves me speechless.
